Asutosh Museum of Indian Art is the museum of the University of Calcutta, which was named after Asutosh Mookerjee. Mookerjee was a distinguished personality in the field of education. The artifact collection of the Asutosh Museum is put up on display for both students and other visitors.
Significantly, the University of Kolkata is the first Indian University to house a museum of this kind. The present location of the museum is the centenary hall of the Calcutta University in College Street, Kolkata-700 003. The venue of the Asutosh Museum has been changed many a times before being housed in its permanent complex in the Calcutta University. weekends and public holidays. College street is a busy area in central Kolkata and visitors to the museum have a number of options for transportation. The Central Metro Station is the nearest station from the Museum. But from the station the visitors have to walk or take an auto to College Square. However, if one is coming from north or South Calcutta, a number of trams and buses are available.
What to See at Asutosh Museum of Indian Art
The artifact collection of Asutosh Museum of Indian Art Calcutta includes rare collections from all over Bengal. Bengali saris from the rural areas are well-known for their unique work. Saris with katha stitch work, batik, baluchori and such other works are on display in the Museum. It is interesting to have a look at the traditional items of daily use such as dolls, playing cards, worshiping items, palm leaf manuscripts and other types of toys. Spectacular basalt sculptures from the Pal and Sen eras are also put up on display in the Asutosh Museum of Indian Art.
