Aparna Sen


Aparna Sen, born in 1945, is a popular film personality and one of the best actresses in India. She was born in a family that was already involved deeply with the film industry. Her father Chidanda Das Gupta was a film maker, critic and a renowned film historian. Undoubtedly, she had all the qualities she needed to make a strong foothold in the film industry. She was awarded with the Padmashree Award by the President of India. She was also awarded the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to the film industry.

She has been associated with the film industry through her different roles as director, script writer and actor. She is known for creating serious movies which are often critically acclaimed at the highest level of Indian cinema. She started her career as an actress in one of Satyajit Ray’s movie named ‘Sampatti’. Gradually she became recognized at the theater and the cinema world for her works. Film critics began taking note of her performances.

Aparna Sen's debut film 36 Chowringhee Lane was the stepping stone in the field of film direction. In fact, she also wrote the story herself. This film was appreciated a lot and received a number of National and International awards. 36 Chowringhee Lane received the award for best direction in India and was also awarded the Grand prix at the Manila International Film Festival. Besides this movie, she also directed a number of other successful films like Sati, Yugant and Parama.

The magazine is one of the largest selling Bengali magazines in West Bengal. The editorial of the magazine contains her thoughts that she pens down herself.
