Alokeranjan Dasgupta was born at Calcutta on the 6th of October, in the year 1933. He pursued his studies from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. He studied at the St. Xavier’s College and Presidency College, obtained a Ph.D. in Indian Poetry from Calcutta University.
Career of Alokeranjan Dasgupta
He began his career by teaching comparative literature at Jadavpur University, Calcutta. He continued with this job from 1957 to 1971. After 1971, he joined the University of Heidelberg in Germany as a faculty member of the South Asia Institute.
Contribution of Alokeranjan Dasgupta
Alokeranjan Dasgupta was a great poet who wrote more than 20 beautiful books that contained compilations of his poetries. He had a good grasp over different languages. He used his skills to translate Bengali poetry as well as Santal Poetry and some plays into German and English languages. He also translated in Bengali a number of literary works written in French and German. He had a distinct pattern of writing prose and was well known for his style of

writing. Alokeranjan Dasgupta wrote several essay books as well. He translated his book “Marami Karat” that contained a collection of his poems into English (named as ‘The Mystical Saw and Other Poems’).
