The Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata was officially founded in the year of 1933 under the Chairmanship of Sri R. N. Mookherjee. The Academy was then just a one-room flat that displayed its art works in the annual exhibition. In 1950, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr. B .C Roy decided to set up an art gallery in Calcutta. Thus was the establishment of the present day Academy of Fine Arts in the Maidan area of the city.
One of the earliest art galleries of India, the Academy of Fine Arts exhibits the traditional and modern art works of renowned painters. The Academy also offers courses on sculpture making and painting to children and adults. The ground floor of the Academy has eight huge art galleries that display exquisite paintings of artists. Modern Art Gallery, Gallery of Miniature Paintings, Gallery of Old Textiles, Carpet Gallery, Gallery of Contemporary Graphics and Line Drawings and Gallery of Engravings are some of the worth visiting galleries of the Academy of Fine Arts.

Besides arranging for exhibitions, the Academy of Fine Arts issues booklets and organizes lectures for enlightening the interested candidates on various aspects of art and sculpture work. The Academy houses a studio for sketching and sculpting. The junior division of the studio helps the students of 14 to 18 years age group to explore various dimensions of painting, sketching and sculpturing. The tiny tots division caters to children of 4-14 age group and provides them with an opportunity to develop artistic skills.
At present, Russi Modi is the Chairman of the Academy of Fine Arts who is assisted by Vice Presidents, Executive Committee Officials, Joint Honorary Secretaries, Honorary Treasurer and Director. The Academy of Fine Arts is supported by modern infrastructural amenities of computer laboratory, library and studios for quality productions of artwork.
