Sea Coast of Kochi

The 30 miles long sea coast of the city is an integral part of the Cochin Taluk. The backwaters regions are also found in the Cochin Taluk. Some of the islands that are included in the taluks of Cochin and Anayannur include Vypeen, Ponjikkara, Kumbalam, Willingdon, Cheranelloor and Ramanthuruthu. While some of these islands measure not even one square mile, some others are four square miles long.
Plains of Kochi

The plains of Kochi are found in the Cochin Taluk. Cochin Taluk comprises Cochin Azhi and Fort Cochin. The southern part of Kochi stretches from Fort Cochin to Chellanam. Cochin Azhi includes Vypeen Kara which falls on the northern side. The plains of Kochi mainly consist of drainage features through rivers, canals and backwaters.

Lakes and Rivers in Kochi

The Vembanad Lake intersects the Kochi Taluk. Muvattupuzha and Periyar are the two rivers that flow through the city of Kochi. During summers, the river of Muvattupuzha has a depth of less than one foot, while during the winters the water levels go up to 25 to 30 feet.

Recent sediments which include Teri’s, Brown sands and Alluvium, are found in the West of Kochi city.
