Religion in Kochi is a mix of diverse cultures. The religions prevalent in the Keralean city of Kochi are Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism and Jainism are also practiced in Kochi. Hindus make up the majority (47%) of the Kochi population. However, there are also Muslims, Christians (35%), Buddhists and Jains in the city. The city is also home to descendants of Jews who had migrated from other corners of the world generations ago. However, in the former times tree worship and animal worship formed an important part of the religious belief of people of Kochi. These forms of worship are still prevalent there. Muslims of Kochi are mainly followers of Sunni Islam. They follow Islamic practices like Friday prayers, Shahadat recitals, daily prayers five times a day and observing the feast during the Ramzan season. During Christmas, the Christian community assembles at churches to attend masses and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Festivals like Easter, Christmas and Good Friday are commemorated elaborately.
