Kochi Refineries Limited


Kochi Refineries Limited had commenced when USA’s Phillips Petroleum Company, Government of India and Kolkata's Duncan Brothers signed an agreement on 27th April 1963, for the building of a petroleum refinery at Kochi in Kerala. Construction work for the industry started in 1964 and the first unit came into existence in the year 1966.

Kochi Refineries Limited is a petroleum refining company. The company was formerly known as Cochin Refineries Limited. Kochi Refineries refines and processes diesel, aviation fuel, petroleum hydrocarbon solvent, toluene, benzene, and bitumen.

History of Kochi Refineries Limited

Kochi Refineries was commissioned in the year 1966 and had the capacity to produce yearly 2.5 million metric ton of crude oil. Kochi Refineries Limited was inaugurated by former Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. In 1989, Kochi Refineries came into the area of petrochemicals by granting the production of aromatics. The production capacities of Benzene and Toluene per annum for this purpose were 87,000 tons and 12,000 tons respectively.
In the year 1991, 26.3 MW captive power plant was commissioned and another such plant with 17.8 MW got commissioned in 1998.

About Kochi Refineries Limited

Kochi Refineries Limited was the first industry in Kerala, which received consent for discharging treated waste -water into the inland waters from the Pollution control board. The company has also received the credential of being Kerala's first industry to get the certification of ISO 14001.

Mr. B.K. Menon is the Managing Director of Kochi Refineries Limited. In the year 1994, refining capacity of the industry was increased to 7.5 mmpta. In 2003, an LPG bottling plant having the capacity of 44,000 TPA was licensed. Again in 2004, the industry got the permission of commencing a Bitumen Emulsion plant with the capacity of 10000 TPA.

Kochi Refineries Limited has been merged with Bharat Petroleum and is presently known by the name of BPCL- Kochi Refinery. The industry has been successful in redefining the technological standards and preferences of the market.
