Kochi Kathakali

Kathakali had its origin in the ancient times dating back to 8th century. It is believed that Kathakali had its birth from ‘Ramanattam’, one of the famous dance dramas. ‘Ramanattam’ was first
staged by Kottarakkara Thampuran. The dance drama gained popularity in those days. Kottarakkara Thampuran is famous for his valued contribution to promote Kathakali as a dance form.

Kathakali of Kochi depicts drama through a dance form. Hands and eyes are mainly used by the actor to express basic expressions of the dance drama. The subject of the dance form is collected mainly from the traditional Malayalam literature. Apart from this, the subject of this classical dance form is also derived from the myths and legends associated with Indian culture.
