Cochin Shipyard Limited is listed among the first ten public sector undertakings of Government of India. Cochin Shipyard Limited is the builder of the largest ships for Indian Naval Services as well as merchant navy ships. Both ship building and ship repairing is done in Cochin Shipyard Limited. According to the Chairman and Managing Director of Kochi Shipyard Limited, one of the major efforts of the shipyard is to appear as an internationally competitive yard.
In the year 1972, Cochin Shipyard was incorporated as a fully owned company of Government of India. Cochin Shipyard Limited emerged as forerunner in the Shipbuilding & ship repair industry of India. Commodore M Jitendran is the Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited.
History of Cochin Shipyard Limited
Kochi Shipyard was conceived in the year 1969. The company was incorporated legally in 1972 and building of ships was started from 1978. The completion of the facilities of the yard in the first phase was over in 1982. Cochin Shipbuilding yard was constructed and designed under the industrial partnership with M/S Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The ship repairing operations were started at Cochin Shipbuilding Limited in the year 1981.
Cochin Shipyard Limited has set tie-ups with specialist firms for various processes like material packages, rigs and up gradation of facilities of the yard.

Cochin Shipyard Limited, which is the country’s largest green field ship repair and ship building yard, is located nearby the Port of Cochin. The total area of the yard is 170 acres. Cochin Shipyard Limited is also in close proximity to the spot where Vasco da Gama landed for the first time in India.

Over the years, Kochi Shipyard has successfully achieved many milestones. It is the only Indian ship yard that can build a maximum of 1, 10,000 DWT. The shipyard in Kochi has a long list of reputed international customers.
In the field of ship repairing too, many important milestones have been achieved by Cochin Shipyard Limited. It is the only yard where Air Defense ships can be restored.
Training for Marine Engineering and basic and advanced courses in fire fighting are also conducted by Cochin Shipyard Limited.
