One day before this colorful festival, people collect together and burn bonfires to symbolize the burning of evil. The next day, people collect together and anoint each other with colored powders of various hues. They also throw water-filled balloons at each other and pelt each other with colored water. Customs and Traditions: Some of the Indian traditions are "namaskar," "bindi," and "aarti." The traditional Indian way of greeting people is to join both palms together and say "namaste." This is also the customary way to bid farewell to someone. Married Hindu woman always put a round vermilion mark in the center of their foreheads. This is supposed to bring longevity to their husbands. It is essential for all married women to put this mark on her forehead. "Aarti" is also a customary Indian tradition. In this, five small lamps, called "niranjans" are filled with oil and arranged on a metal plate. This is used to pray to God or to welcome guests or family members back to the house. This is also used to welcome a newly married couple when they enter the house for the first time. The five lamps are lighted and the tray is rotated in a circular motion in front of the guests or God.
