Delhi city is situated within the metropolis of Delhi. It is a state and a city both. The state and city of Delhi consists of New Delhi, Delhi Cantonment, and Old Delhi. Delhi city is also called National Capital Territory of Delhi. New Delhi is the capital of the country of India. The seat of the government of India is located in New Delhi. Delhi city is a big tourist center of India and many tourists visit Delhi city every year to see its world-famous monuments, which are built in the traditional Mughal, Afghan, Hindu, and British architecture. Delhi city is an ancient city with a rich history. It is believed that Delhi city has been settled for about 2,500 years.

Area: The National Capital Territory of Delhi occupies a total area of 1482 square km.

Per Capita Income: The per capita income of Delhi city in 2002-2003 was Rs. 47,477 (US $1,069).

Population: The population of Delhi city in 2005 was 15,333,741 people.

Racial Makeup: Punjabis and Jats form a large majority of the people. But, there are also a large number of people from all states of India.

Economy: Delhi city is the center of economy and finance of India.

Delhi city is the manufacturing center of northern India. In the end of the 19th century, the arts, crafts, textiles, and handloom industries in Delhi expanded greatly. In the last few years, the services sector of Delhi city has received a boost. Many multinational companies have set up bases in Delhi city to tap the huge resource pool of English-speaking people. The main industries, which have seen a lot of overseas investments are information technology, banking, media, telecommunications, and life sciences. Two of Delhi's suburban cities, Gurgaon and Noida, have seen investments of $5 billion in the last few years.

Climate:Delhi city has typical tropical climate. Summers are extremely hot and winters are extremely cold. Summers last from late April to October. June is the hottest month with temperatures reaching up to 92o F. The heat wave is extremely strong and adequate precautions need to be taken before venturing out in the blazing Sun. The coldest month is January with average temperature of 58o F. During the winters, the cold winds from the Himalayas make the city very cold. The city of Delhi receives monsoon rains, which are a typical feature of the tropics. Almost all of the rainfall received by Delhi city is during the monsoon, which lasts from July to August.

Rainfall: Delhi city receives an average annual rainfall of 714 mm.

Government Type: Delhi city has its own Legislative Assembly, Lieutenant Governor, Council of Ministers, and Chief Minister. The seats of the Legislative Assembly are filled by direct voting by the people of Delhi city. The Legislative Assembly elects a Chief Minister from among its members. However, Delhi city is jointly administered by the Union Government of India and the territorial government of Delhi.
