Vandalur Zoo is the first public zoo of India. It is located in Vandalur, about 30 kms away from the city of Chennai. Initially the zoo was situated in Chennai city. In 1979 it was shifted to its present location by the Forest department of Tamil Nadu.
Animals in Vandalur Zoo
In Vandalur zoo a wide range of animals are found. The zoo is home to around 170 species of mammals, reptiles and aviaries. Many types of monkeys and deer can also be seen here. Some of these include Sambar, Nilgai, Sangai, Hog deer, Lion-tailed Macaque and Leaf capped Langur.
Tiger, Lion, Panther, Otter, Jaguar, Jackal, Wolf, Hyena, Elephants, Giraffes and Camels are also found here.

The zoo also exhibits some of the rare birds from Australia. A number of stone boards inside the zoo provide information to the visitors on the mating and breeding habits of the animals.
Student Zoo Club in Vandalur Zoo
A student zoo club is situated inside the Vandalur zoo. The members of this club are provided training on the following sectors:
