History of the Temple
Vadapalani Andavar Temple has a rather interesting past. It is believed that a Muruga devotee made a hut on the very place where the temple stands today. This devotee kept a painting of Murugan in this hut and started offering prayers. It is said that the devotee used to utter words in trance that later came true. This phenomenon was referred to as Arulvak. Later a Saiva Pravakta took major initiatives to transform this hut into an excellent temple structure.

Dakshina Murti and Mahalakshmi are found in the inner domain of the temple. The gopuram on the gateway of the temple has excellent image manifestations of Skanda Puranam. The 40.8 m high tower on the eastern side of the temple depicts the 108 gestures of Bharata Natyam dance.

The priests of the Vadapalani Andavar Temple in Chennai start the puja ceremony from 05.00 am in the morning. The last prayers are offered to the presiding deity at 09.00 pm in the night.
