Thousand Lights Mosque |
|
Thousand Lights Mosque, located at Anna Salai of Chennai, is a well known religious place of the Muslims. There was an Assembly Hall before the construction of the mosque. About 100 oil-lamps were required to light up this hall from which the mosque has derived its name. Every year, during the time of Moharram festival, this mosque witnesses a huge crowd.
Thousand Lights Mosque is a well-known tourist attraction of Chennai. It was established by Nawab Umdat-ul-Umrah in 1810 AD. It has derived its name from the fact that about 1000 oil-lamps lighted up an Assembly Hall that used to occupy the triangular wedge between Peter's Road and Mount Road. The mosque is ideally situated at the cross-section of these two roads in Anna Salai. The Anna flyover is located nearby. The Assembly Hall was constructed by the Arcot family.
Before the establishment of the mosque, it was a shrine of the Shiite Muslims. The walls of the mosque have been inscribed with quotations from Quran. The Thousand Lights Mosque, Chennai lies on the coordinates of 13° 3' 17" North latitude of the Equator and 80° 15' 18" East longitude Prime Meridian as per the Chennai Map.
