The Harbour of Chennai is now over 100 years old. This project was taken up at the initiative of the Governor from 1872-1875 named Lord Hobart. The storm of 1881 destroyed the harbor totally. But re-construction work was given to the Chennai Port Trust in 1881.
The Harbour is an ancient landmark of the city of Chennai. This artificial harbor is as old as over 100 years. It was earlier used as a travel port. But now this harbor of Chennai is used as a container port. It is ideally located on the Coromandel Coast. It was Lord Hobart, the Governor from 1872-1875, who initiated the Chennai Harbor project.

storm hit the harbor and destroyed it. The re-construction work was taken over by the Chennai Port Trust in 1881. The South Quay I was completed in 1913, the five West Quay berths from 1916 to 1920, the North Quay in 1931 and finally the South Quay II in 1936. They were later on named together as Dr Ambedkar Dock.
The Harbor in Chennai has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the city through its import-export trade. Sir Francis Spring brought about major developments of the harbor from 1905-1919. Presently the Chennai Port has got three docks namely Jawahar Dock, Dr.Ambedkar Dock and Bharathi Dock.
The increase in container traffic has led to the planning of constructing another container terminal whose management has been taken over by P and O Ports of Australia.
