The Crocodile Bank |

Visitors in Chennai can explore a number of tourist spots in and around the city limits. The Crocodile Bank is one of them. The distance of the place is about 35 kms from the city center. It is spread over a total area of 3.2 hectares. In the Crocodile Bank, some of the rare reptiles such as alligators and Crocodiles are preserved since 1976.
The Crocodile bank of Chennai was established by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker. It is situated on the way to Mahabalipuram. Various species of African and Indian reptiles are preserved in the open pools of this bank. Around 6,000 crocodiles has been produced in this bank since its inception.
The Crocodile Bank in Chennai carries out researches on the biology of the crocodiles. Turtles and monitor lizards are also the subjects of research.

Attractions of the Crocodile Bank
Apart from the Crocodiles, the bank also holds a snake farm, which produces anti-venom. Travelers also get attracted to the procedure of extracting snake venom. These snakes are cached by the rural tribes, called 'Irulas'.
