Stanley Medical College

The Stanley Medical College was formed in 1938 in Chennai. In the year 2007, the college was declared 11th out of the 25 medical colleges of India. Run by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the college has both undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses.

The history of Stanley Medical College, Chennai dates back to 1740. The East India Compnay first established a medical department. Later in 1782 Monegar Choultry was built in the present day location of the college. Again the Assistant John Native Infirmary was formed along with the Leper Asylum and Monegar Choultry in 1809. The Native Infirmary started housing a hospital and dispensary from 1830 which was offered by Raja Sir Ramasamy Mudaliar. The M.B. & G.M. and L.M & S Medical courses were introduced in the Native Infirmary in the year 1836 by the Madras University. East India Company further incorporated a hospital assistant course in the year 1903. Licence for medical practitioners was offered to the college in 1911. In the following years, the Stanley Medical College emphasized on the core development of the infrastructure and courses. Today, the college is one of the prestigious educational institutions of Chennai.
