St. Mary's Church |

St Mary's Church is one of the oldest monuments that enhance the pride of Chennai. One of the major tourist attractions of Chennai, it is the first Anglican Church that was constructed in Asia. It is also popularly known as the 'Westminster Abbey of the East' for its grand structure and architectural splendor. The church dates back to the late 17th century and is still admired by tourists.
St Mary's Church derived its name from Mother Mary and the foundation of the structure was laid on the Annunciation Day. Edwad Fowle designed this beautiful church and William Dixon implemented the design through his architectural skills. The entire structure presents a unique charm to the tourists for its grand architecture. The ambience of the St Mary's Church in Chennai is serene and tranquil.
St Mary's Church at Chennai is a bombproof structure. The external walls of the church have coats of polished lime that give it a smooth effect. The interior décor of

the church is also a thing to watch out for. Wooden work with stained glass arches along with beautiful paintings have made the interiors even more attractive. Renovations have also been carried out and many features have been added to enhance the beauty of the church to a great deal. There is a huge painting of The Last Supper by an anonymous artist as the altarpiece. There are also tombstones and memorials in the church premises. The inclusion of a Sanctuary, Tower, Vestry and a Steeple has added more charm to St Mary's Church, Chennai.
St Mary's Church also acts as a record of old times. The various registers and visitors' book are all records of bygone times. Birth as well as marriage registration records are also found in the church. Though the church was initially a Governors congregation, however it changed to a garrison church and finally it became a heritage monument of Chennai. Presently the monument is under the supervision and protection of the Archeological Survey of India.
