R.K.Narayan is one of the renowned Novelists in India. He was among the very few writers of his time who used English as a medium of writing. He has always focused on writing realistic fictions which were humorous too. Almost in all of his writings he has written on the lives of the common people from Malgudi.
R.K.Narayan was born on 10th October in Chennai city. He was the third one among his siblings. Narayan’s mother was seriously ill after his birth and was not in a position to take care of him. So he was sent to Madras to his grandparent’s house where he had been bought up and educated.
R.K.Narayan completed his bachelor degree from the University of Mysore. He was fond of writing since his boyhood days and has written many short stories and novels throughout his career. He started as a short story writer for ‘The Hindu’ newspaper. His first published work was a review, which he wrote on a book titled ‘Development of Maritime Laws of 17th

Many works of Narayan reflects his personal memories with his wife, who died at a young age. His simplistic way of writing and choosing the common people as the main subjects has made him a favorite among the readers.
Honor and awards received by R.K.Narayan
In his writing career, Narayan has received many recognitions and awards. He was honored with Sahitya Academy Award and Padma Bhushan. He has also been rewarded with the AC Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature. A number of times, Narayan have also been nominated for the Noble Prize in literature, but he has not received the same in his life time. His works have been translated in all European languages and got appreciation from some of the noted English writers such as Somerset Maugham, Graham Greene and John Updike. R.K. Narayan died on March 13, 2001.
