Ripon Building

The Ripon Building is one of the most prominent landmarks of Chennai. Located in close proximity to the Chennai Central Train Station, the building is the headquarters of the Corporation of Chennai. Established in the year 1909, the structure is named after Lord Ripon. He was a propagator for ideas related to local self-government and almost implemented the concept in India. However it was in the year 1913 that the functioning of the Chennai Municipal Corporation began from Ripon Building.

Ripon Building in Chennai is a grand structure, entirely white in color with magnificent domes. There are three architectural styles that are involved in the designing and construction of this impressive structure. They are Gothic, Corinthian and Ionic. The walls of the building have been made stronger with the help of lime mortar and use of stock bricks. The total floor area that is
occupied by Ripon Building of Chennai is around 9,628 square meters. The ground floor had stone flooring, but it was later replaced with marble. However, the first and the second floors have terracotta floors. The entire building has an ethnic touch to it. Joints made of high quality teakwood support the roof of the building.

There are a number of structures that are there in the premises of the Ripon Building at Chennai. These include the Moore Market, Nehru Stadium, Victoria Public Hall and some well-maintained and beautiful parks and gardens. Another major attraction of the Ripon Building, Chennai is the West Minster Quarter Chiming Clock that is there in the building since 1913 at an altitude of 20.58 meters. The clock was put up in the building by Oakes and Co. There is a mechanical key system that is there in the clock and it has to be wound every day for proper functioning.
