Rajiv Gandhi Memorial of Sriperumbudur is a memorial built in the memory of the late Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated at the town of Sripermbudur on 21st May 1991 and the memorial reflects the reverence to the great leader.

Sriperumbudur is the spot where this memorial is located. The town is located at a distance of 42 kilometers from Chennai. After Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated at this town, decision was taken to build a memorial at the spot in the memorial of the great leader.
Building of Rajiv Gandhi Memorial
The work for Rajiv Gandhi Memorial got started during June 1994. To build the memorial, about 12.19 acres of land was donated free of cost by the Tamil Nadu Government. It took about 21.15 crores of rupees for the construction of the memorial and the construction works
was carried out by Central Public Works Department.

Architecture of Rajiv Gandhi Memorial
There is a square platform of size 40'x 40' on which, a raised platform having diameter of 21' has been built. The raised platform is made of yellow marble stone of Jaisalmer. On the elevated platform there is a picture of late Rajiv Gandhi made of stone block of pink granite.
There are seven monumental granite pillars, which circle the blast site. The granite pillars have bronze capital on its top. These pillars represent the concepts of Satya, Dharma, Vigyan, Nyaya, Shanti, Tyaga and Smiridhi. The seven sacred rivers of our country, Yamuna, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Godavari, Sindhu, Narmada and Kaveri are also represented by the piilars.
At the base of the pillars different quotations of Rajiv Gandhi have been written. Each of the pillars has separate patterns of carving. On the southern side of the memorial relief works have been made on stonewall of grey granite depicting the changing of Indian Civilization starting from the early stage to the modern times. "The path of Light" at the memorial describes the last steps that were taken by the leader.

Rajiv Gandhi Memorial is located at Sriperumbudur. Sriperumbudur can be reached by buses from Chennai. The National Highway of Chennai to Bangalore is the roadways to reach the town. The nearest airport is Chennai airport. The tourists can also reach the spot in cars.
