Chennai Mayor is known to lead the Execuive branch of the Chennai Corporation. The worhipful Mayor of Chennai is elected through the Corporation election. At present Ma. Subramanian is the 46th Mayor of Chennai city.
The Chennai Mayor, once elected for the esteemed post, is not allowed to serve as a councillor of the local area or a Member of the Legisltive Assmbly.
Election of the Chennai Mayor
The Mayor of Chennai is elected through the votes casted in the Corporation election. There are a total of 155 wards under the Chennai Corporation. Various political parties including the leading ones represent their candidates from all these wards who contest the election of the Corporation. The one who achieves the highest number of votes is nominated as the Mayor of the city of Chennai. The Mayor leads the Executive branch of the Chennai Corporation for a period of five years.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Chennai Mayor
Being an ex-officio member of all the wards and standing committees of the Chennai Corporation, the Mayor is responsible for heading the council. The various proceedings of the Council are also taken care of by the Mayor of Chennai city.
