Mamallapuram Dance Festival


Mamallapuram Dance Festival is organized from early January to the first week of February. Vraious dance forms like Kuchipudi, Kathak, Odissi, Bharata Natyam, Kathakali, Mohiniattam are performed in an open air theatre. This program is organized by the Department of Tourism of the Tamil Nadu Government.

Mamallapuram Dance Festival is a well-known festival that takes place from early January to the first week of February at Mahabalipuram. It is a four week long festival, which is held at the location of 'Arjuna's penance'. This site has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Dance Festival of Mamallapuram is organized by the Tamil Nadu government’s Department of Tourism.

A variety of dance forms are performed in front of the rock sculptures of the Pallava during the Mamallapuram Dance Festival. Dances like Kuchipudi,
Kathak, Odissi, Bharata Natyam, Kathakali, Mohiniattam and also folk dance forms are staged in an open air platform. This open air theatre, standing next to the sea, was built thirteen hundred years ago.

This vibrant Dance Festival, Mamallapuram is attended by not only dancers from various corners of India but also tourists from all over the country. Tourists get to see a conglomeration of various cultures during this festival.

For getting there, the nearest airport is the Chennai Airport that is located at a distance of 58 kilometers. Buses for Mamallapuram are available from Chengalpattu, Pondicherry, Chennai and Kanchipuram. Chennai and Chengalpattu are the nearest railway stations. Besides, taxis are also widely available for getting to Mamallapuram.
