The Madras Music Academy is one of the premier institutions in Chennai that imparts training in Carnatic music. The academy is not only dedicated to the teaching of music, it also takes initiative in the encouragement and propagation of classical Carnatic music through various concerts and music conferences.
The plan for establishing a music academy for the propagation and encouragement of Carnatic music in Chennai was set up at the 1927 All-India Music Conference. Soon after that, a committee was set up to carry out the task of forming this academy. It was finally inaugurated on 18th August 1928. Since its inception, the academy has tried to provide the best training to the budding artists and talents in the city.
The Music Academy has two main buildings, which are known as the T. T. Krishnamachari Hall and the Kasturi Srinivasan Hall. The Kasturi Srinivasan Hall was built at a later stage and has a library, committee room, auditorium and recording rooms. The Madras Music Academy has many leading artists and personalities in its advisory committee that help in the advancement and enhancement of Carnatic music. There are also members, who are invited to serve as members on a yearly basis.

Madras Music Academy also has a rich research center that has helped students as well as researchers to gather lots of information on the various spheres of research related to music. The research center also gets handsome donation and aid from renowned personalities for enhancing the work on research and publishing activity. The library of the Madras Music Academy has a rich collection of books that are linked with music. There are also many rare manuscripts that have been well preserved in the library. The library source is so rich that it is not only used by the students of the academy but also by music researchers and scholars from the other states. There is also an archive section in the library that houses many tapes, which are related to renowned personalities. The institution also gives out many awards, recognitions and certificates to its students, who have excelled in the field of music.
