Kavadi Festival


Kavadi festival is celebrated at Palani. During the festival devotees carry Kavadis or flower decked decorations all the way to Palani. The festival is dedicated to Lord Murugan. Kavadi festival centers round the song and dance, which are done in order to lessen their boredom. Kavadi Attam, a dance form originated from this festival, is performed only by men.

The Kavadi festival is one such Chennai religious festival, which is celebrated in honor of Lord Muruga. Kavadi or a flower decked decorations are carried by the devotees all the way to the Palani Hills. The festival is held at every temple of Lord Muruga.

Description

As described in the Hindu mythology, two hillocks were
carried by Idumban on a pole tied on both ends. It is also believed that in the early days Tamils used to carry their offerings tied on both ends of a pole. The pole is balanced on the shoulders of the carrier. The devotees used to sing and dance in the name of gods in order to lessen their boredom. In this way Kavadi Attam had its birth and only men perform this dance. The dance centers round balancing the poles made of teakwood tied with pots on both ends. The pots are filled with coconut water or milk. Devotees from all part of the country come and participate in this festival. They carry their Kavadis to the Palani hills according to the tradition.

Transportation

Most of the cities are conveniently connected to Palani. There are frequent bus services from cities like Coimbatore, Madurai, Dindugal, Chennai and Tiruchi. Madurai and Coimbatore are the nearest airports to Palani.
