The Chennai Government Museum is one of the oldest museums and displays an eclectic collection of artifacts. The museum also holds a public library and theatre hall in the premises. The Museum is one of the first government sponsored museums in Chennai. It is also counted among the Chennai attractions.
Location and Timing
Chennai Government Museum stands on the Pantheon Road in Egmore. The museum remains open from 9.30 in the morning to 5 in the evening. The museum remains closed on public holidays and also on Fridays.
Brief History of the Museum
The Chennai Government Museum was established during the colonial rule in India. The museum was

initially conceived by the Madras Literary Society in the year 1946. The Court of Directors of the East India Company in London gave consent to the proposal of the Madras Literary Society to bring up the museum. H. Arvin designed the museum. The museum was inaugurated in the year 1895 by the then governor, Sir Arthur Elibank Havelock. The museum was named after Lord Connenmara.
Sections and Galleries
The museum houses 4 galleries and 7 sections, which displays some rare articles of great value. The galleries are of Hindu Sculpture Gallery, National Art Gallery, Bronze Gallery and Amravathi Gallery. The sections housed by the Chennai Government Museum are Zoology, Anthropology, Numismatics, Botany, Archeology, Sculpture and Geology. The Government Museum of Chennai also houses a museum for the kids. There are three sections in the kids museum which are Kids Corner, Transportation Gallery and the Civilization Gallery.
