George Town came into existence in 1639 AD and was named after King George V. The Eastern Coastal Plains of the city of Chennai houses the George Town. Today, the town is one of the bustling commercial centers of the city.

Establishment of George Town
The history of establishment of George Town dates back to 1639 AD when it came into existence. In the following year, the famous Fort St. George was built by the East India Company in the Town. This fort made George Town one of the major landmarks of India in the colonial era. Also, the town, during the rule of British Empire, was one of the important naval bases of the country. Since the Town was in proximity with the Chennai Port, hence many dockyard laborers used to stay here in the ancient times.
