Music and dance are an integral part of the cultural life of the people of Chennai. Bharatanatyam is the classical Chennai dance that has made a mark not only in the Indian cultural scenario, but also all over the world. This dance form originated in Tamil Nadu. The other dance forms that have originated with time are Kummi, Kolattam and Karagaattam.
Chennai danceis a mix of both classical and folk dances. The various dance forms prevalent in Chennai have made the performing arts more diverse. Bharatanatyam is the most popular dance form of Chennai. It had its origin in the Thanjavoor district of Tamil Nadu. This dance form was first performed by devdasis but with the passage of time it was transformed into a classical performing art. Apart from Bharatanatyam, the other prevalent dance forms are Kummi, Karagaattam and Kolattam.

Bharatanatyam
Chennai dance, popularly known as Bharatanatyam, was originally the art form that was practiced by the temple dancers. This is an extremely old dance form and finds its roots in the Natya Shastra, penned by Bharata Muni. In ancient times, the practice of the dance form was done by devdasis and was restricted within the temple premises. However with times changing, the dance form was opened to the common masses and came to be recognized as one of the more popular classical dance forms in India masses and came to be recognized as one of the more popular classical dance forms in India.

Bharatanatyam is presented through seven items, which are mythical representations based on Abhinaya Darpan and Natya Shastra.
Kolattam
Kolattam is one of the folk dance forms of Chennai. The dance takes place in an open place and people of all age groups can participate in this folk dance. However, the number of participants is restricted to 10 or 12 people. The term 'Kola' means stick and rhythmic sounds are made while the dance is in motion. The participants of the dance sing and dance while beating the two sticks. The participants are required to make their own sticks. The dance form is mainly performed during the summer season.
Kummi
'Kummi' means to dance synchronously forming a circle with specific body movements linked to popular music. This dance form is performed by women during Kaanum Pongal and Maariamman, popular festivals of Chennai.
Karagaattam
This special dance form is performed balancing decorated pots on the head. The dance was performed to praise the rain goddess. Atta karagam and the Sakthi Karagam are the two divisions of this dance. Atta Karagam was practiced in Tamil Nadu temples while the Sakthi Karagam is performed for merrymaking and joy.
