Cooum in Chennai is one of the two rivers running through the city. There was a time when the water of the river was pollution-free. At that point of time people used to do boating and fishing in Cooum River. Afterwards, the river was over-polluted with dirt and sewages. In the city of Chennai, the Cooum River runs through two separate routes and enters the sea.
Cooum river of Chennai is also known as the Kuvum River. The length of the river is about 65 kilometers, of which 18 kilometer falls within the city boundary. The Kesavaram dam redirects the river into the Chembarambakkam Lake. This is the main source of drinking water for the citizens in Chennai.
It is said that the name of the ‘River Cooum’ is originated from the Tamil word ‘Coovalan’.
