Buckingham Canal


Buckingham Canal is expanded from Vijayawada to Tamil Nadu. Some parts of the canal lies within the city limits of Chennai. Long time back the canal was used to export goods. With time it was overloaded with sewage and was not used anymore. Constructed by the British rulers as homage to their Queen, the canal holds an important place in the history of South India.

The Buckingham Canal in Chennai runs almost parallel to the Coast and covers the entire length of the city. The Canal in the map of India is located at 13º4’N latitude and 80º16’E longitude. Historically the canal holds a significant place in Chennai. It was built by the British-Indian rulers in 1806, as a mark of respect for the queen of England.

The length of the Buckingham Canal is about 420 Kilometers.
Along the Coromandel Coast in South India, the canal runs from Vijayawada to the Villupuram District of Tamil Nadu. Of its total area, around 31 kilometers are part of Chennai City limits.

The Buckingham canal is connected with the Bay of Bengal through the Cooum River. The area of Buckingham Canal, situated on the northern part of the Cooum River, is known as North Buckingham Canal. The area of the canal which is located at the southern part of the River Cooum is known as the South Buckingham Canal.

The distance of Buckingham canal from the Adyar River is about 0.4 kilometer. The major roads around the canal are Kamarajar Salai Road, South Beach Road and Valaji Road.
