Arubathimoovar Festival


Arubathimoovar festival is celebrated between March- April. The festival is celebrated to pay tribute to the 63 saints of Lord Shiva. It is one of the religious festivals in Chennai and is celebrated in the Kapaleeshwara temple. On the festival day the bronze idols are taken on a procession down the streets of Mylapore. The temple is visited by thousands of devotees during the festival days.

Arubathimoovar festival is celebrated in Mylapore between the months of March- April. In this festival 63 Nayanmars are celebrated and is followed with colorful procession of the idols through the streets of the city. It is one of the religious festivals in Chennai and is celebrated in the Kapaleeshwara temple. The temple is famous for its ancient Dravidian architecture dating back to the 8th century.

Literally the term 'Arubathimoovar' means the 63 saints
of Lord Shiva. The festival is held to pay tribute to these 63 saints of Lord Shiva. The festival is held in the Kapaleeshwara temple, which houses the bronze idols of the saints. On the festival day the bronze idols are taken on a procession down the streets of Mylapore. The Kapaleeshwara temple is notable for its sky scrapping gopuram. The elaborate carvings of the 8th century featuring on the temple's gopuram speaks of the architectural excellence of these people. The temple is named after Lord Shiva who is also known as Kapaleeshwarar. The temple is visited by thousands of devotees during the festival days.
