AR Rahman is one of the most popular music composers of India. His versatility of music has earned him a wide recognition. His first big break came from Mani Ratnam’s movie Roja. He has worked for musical albums like ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Jana Gana Mana’. His original name is AS Dileep Kumar.
Early life of AR Rahman
AR Rahman is a famous musician of India, who was born on 6th January, 1966. He hails from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His original name is AS Dileep Kumar. He is the son of Malayalam-language film’s composer, conductor and arranger named RK Shekhar and Kareema Begum.
He married Saira and is blessed with three children named Amin, Khadija and Rahima. He has done his schooling from the PSBB Lake Area School, Nungambakkam and also studied for sometime at the Madras Christian College. He graduated from the Trinity College of Music with a degree in the field of Western classical music.
Career of AR Rahman
Musician AR Rahman in his early days used to play the keyboard for bands like ‘Nemesis Avenue’ and ‘Roots’. He received his training in music from Master Dhanraj. He worked for the musical troupe of composer Ilaiyaraaja, played in the orchestra of Ramesh Naidu and MS Viswanathan.
AR Rahman started composing his own music from 1991 onwards. His biggest break came when film director Mani Ratnam approached him to compose music for his film ‘Roja’. It was a big hit that earned him the ‘Rajat Kamal Award’ in the category of ‘Best Music Director’ at the National Film Awards. He became very famous for his versatile music be it reggae, classical, jazz, folk or something else. He composed his first Hindi film music for Ram Gopal Varma’s film ‘Rangeela’.
He earned a huge recognition as a composer for films like Lagaan, Minsaara Kanavu, Kannathil Muthamittal, Bombay, Kadhalan, Taal and Dil Se. His own music studio named Panchathan Record Inn was renamed as AM Studios and happens to be one of the most developed and high tech Asian studio. He released an

album named ‘Vande Mataram’ in 1997 on the 50th anniversary of India’s independence. His next album was ‘Jana gana mana’ that had songs of some of the reputed singers of Indian classical music.
