Varamahalakshmi


Varamahalakshmi is a significant religious occasion celebrated in Bangalore in the month of August every year. According to the mythology, the festival is derived from the Vedic Age, when human beings could talk to god directly. The story reveals that an old lady, who was terribly poor, was advised by 'Devi Laxmi' to do 'Laxmi Puja' to get her blessings and bring prosperity in the family.

In Bangalore, Varamahalakshmi Puja is celebrated by women of the society. They offer jewels, cash and other
valuables to the goddess and pray for the financial stability in the family. The people, who goes through some kind of major financial loss, performs Varamahalakshmi puja, believing that it may bring them back the lost wealth, peace and happiness.

Married women visit each others house on this day and offer vermillion or kumkum to each other. This is a typical custom of this puja, where at least 5 married women should exchange the kumkum among themselves. This ritual is also believed to bring harmony in the family.
