Bangalore University, founded in 1886, received the status of university in 1964. It was accredited by NAAC in 2001. About 375 colleges are affiliated to this university. It possesses 70 post graduate departments. A number of graduates from this university are placed abroad. Dr. HA Ranganath is the current Vice Chancellor of this university.
Bangalore University was established in 1886. But it received the status of a university in 1964 on 10th of July. This university is one of the leading universities of India and is UGC recognized. It used to be a Central College under the British Government in 1886. It received a five star status by NAAC in 2001. The present Vice Chancellor of this university is Dr. HA Ranganath.
The University of Bangalore is a part of AIU (The Association of Indian Universities). It has got a total of six departments. They are:

The university has introduced 6 new courses from 2006 onwards. These are:
- Master of Architecture on Construction and Project management
- Diploma in Epilepsy Care
- PG Diploma in Electronic Media (1 year)

- MSc in Life Sciences
About a total of 375 colleges are affiliated to the University in Bangalore. For getting admission to the university, one has to have 50% in aggregate and 50% in the specialized subject. However, for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, this percentage is reduced.
Bangalore University, Karnataka has got two seats reserved for those candidates who are sponsored by the Indian Government under the scholarship schemes and self financing foreign students.
The university has got over 70 post graduate departments. It has got a post-graduate centre in Kolar too. Out of the university's four constituent colleges, the University Visveswaraya College of Engineering and the Central College are very famous throughout the country. A number of pass outs from this university are working in abroad countries.
