S M Krishna


S M Krishna is the present Governor of the Indian state of Maharashtra. He was the Chief Minister of the South Indian state of Karnataka for a period of 5 years (October, 1999 to May, 2004). S M Krishna has studied in the United States and is a Fulbright Scholar.

Family Life

S M Krishna or Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna was born in 1932. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Maharajah's College in Mysore. Krishna also holds a law degree from Bangalore's Government Law College. Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna is the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship and studied at the premier George Washington University in Washington D.C. S M Krishna is a sports enthusiast and participates avidly in outdoor recreational activities. He married Prema on 29th April, 1964. Krishna has two daughters.

Political Milestones

S M Krishna debuted as a Member of the 3rd Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1962. He continued as a member of state democratic body until 1967. Krishna participated in the 1965 Parliamentary
Conference in New Zealand. He enjoyed successive wins at the Lok Sabha election and held Lok Sabha seats from 1968 to 1972. Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna was elected as the Chief Minister of Karnataka in 1999. He continued to hold the post until 2004. Krishna was also selected to be an Indian delegate to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Seminar that was held at Westminster in United Kingdom on March, 1990.

Achievements

S M Krishna is noted as a politician who has actively supported private investments in Bangalore. Many multi-national Information Technology (IT) companies have invested in the South Indian city during his tenure. Bangalore is nicknamed 'Silicon Valley of the East' due to the presence of a substantial number of IT companies' production offices within the Bangalore urban area and its hinterland. Krishna is credited with developing and maintaining of the high quality infrastructure of the Karnataka capital city.

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna or S M Krishna presently enjoys the post of the Governor of Maharashtra State. He ascended the post in 2004.
