Lalbagh is one of the major attractions in Bangalore. An ancient garden that was built by the renowned Mysore ruler Hyder Ali, it still attracts thousands of tourists annually. This garden was later expanded and re-developed by Tipu Sultan; another noted Mysore monarch and son of Hyder Ali. In the later years, the garden was maintained and extended by the British as well as by the Government of India. Presently it is under the control and administration of the Directorate of Horticulture, Karnataka Government.
Lalbagh had been approved as a botanical garden in 1856. It was from then on that the place has become a center of attraction for many biologists and horticulturists. There are various species of plants that are found in the garden, some are even of rare origins. Conservation of the varied flora is also the function of the Lalbagh Botanical Garden. The garden is lavishly spread out on an area of 240 acres and has become a paradise for nature lovers.
Lalbagh Garden in Bangalore has been accredited as one of the best gardens in the world. Containing not only innumerable species of plants, the garden is also a place from where lots of information can be gathered regarding the various types of plants and trees. Courses regarding various horticultural and botanical subjects are also offered in the garden. There are around 1900 species of plants that are found in the place. It is truly a treasure house of plants, both ornamental and economic. Some of the important species that are found in the garden are Bixa Orellana, Dillenia Indica, Cola Acuminata, Artocarpus Heterophyllus, Brownea Grandiceps, Eriobotrya Japonica, Swietenia Mahagoni, Mesua Ferrea and many more.

Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Bangalore is not only a place for botanists and horticulturists. It is also a place for general tourists, who want to surrender themselves to nature for sometime. There are well laid out paths, open spaces, a shade and many more attractions for the tourists. The glass-house, pigeon house, the museum, orchid house, lotus pond, tree fossil and some of the cottages in the garden premises are also places, which are worth visiting, while on a trip to the botanical garden in Bangalore.
Reaching Lalbagh, Bangalore is extremely easy. Located in the center of the city, it is at a distance of just four kilometers from the Karnataka State Legislature. There are many roads in Bangalore that connect the garden from various places in the city. The garden is made accessible to the common people from 0600 hrs to 1900 hrs daily, all throughout the year. However, taking videos of the place is strictly prohibited.
There are some special events that are hosted by the garden every year. Flower shows are an integral part of the event calendar in Lalbagh. These are mainly hosted on Republic Day and Independence Day every year.
