Since the introduction of Christianity in Hungary, it has been the major Budapest religion. Another religion of the city is Judaism.
History of Budapest Religion
Budapest religion is predominantly Christian. Though people with other religious identities also live in Budapest, majority of its population consists of Christians. Christianity reached Budapest during the 10th century and for the next six centuries, Budapest remained a catholic city.
When reformation took place, Lutheranism became the dominant religion and was subsequently replaced by Calvinism. The later part of 16th century witnessed the emergence of counter-reformation brought about by the Jesuits. Within a period of 100 years, Budapest, along with the rest of Hungary, had become Catholic once again. Since then the religion of Budapest has remained Roman Catholicism.

Religious Identities
Besides Roman Catholics, people conforming to other sects of Christianity also live in Budapest. They are Protestants, Orthodox Christians etc. Judaism is another significant religion in Budapest. Other religions of Budapest are followed by only a small group of people.
Religious structures are found in plenty in Budapest. There are medieval churches built in various architectural styles. The most popular and important church in Budapest is the St. Stephen's Church. Another significant one is the Matthias Church. Budapest also contains quite a few synagogues like the Dohany Synagogue, Leo Frankel Synagogue, etc.
Religion in Budapest, therefore, has come a long way and is no more confined to the Christian population only. The city boasts of its places of worship which are not only significant in terms of religion but also in terms of architectural magnificence and heritage.
