Kossuth Memorial in Budapest refers to the impressive statue of the Lajos Kossuth, the erstwhile Regent President of Hungary. It is located right in front of the Hungarian Parliament Building situated on the Lajos Kossuth Square in the city. The monument erected as a tribute to a popular national figure stands for national integrity. Most of the state celebrations are organized on the site of this Memorial.
The Kossuth Memorial in the city of Budapest was built after the death of its national leader Lajos Kossuth. The proposal for the building of the monument came soon after the funeral of this national leader who played a significant role during the 1848 Revolution.
Design of the Kossuth Memorial
Several designs for the monument were received from all over the country. Almost a decade later the design of one Janos Horvay was approved. The construction work lasted several years until it was interrupted by the first World War in 1914.

At that point of time all the figures had been built except that of Kossuth himself. After the conclusion of the war, construction of the monument was re started. The statue was finally completed and placed on a pedestal for public viewing.
Kossuth Memorial Renovated
The monument was finally inaugurated for the public in 1927. However, the structure was demolished owing to its lack of popularity amongst the people of the city. A new statue was erected on the lines of the design by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl. This new statue was made of bronze and projected the man with his hand pointing towards the sky, metaphorically towards a bigger and brighter future. The pedestal of the statue was painted in red.
The monument was in commemoration of the rebellion of the people of Hungary against the Hapsburg monarchy. It was built to show respect to a man who had led the movement from the front and was often called the Father of Hungarian Independence.
