The event is one of the most popular sporting events of Hungary and sports enthusiasts from all over the world are drawn to this national event. The Budapest International Marathon would complete its 23rd year in 2008 and will be held on the 5th of September, 2008.
History of Budapest International Marathon
The history of the Budapest International Marathon dates back to the year 1984 when it was first organized. Although people from 18 different countries had participated in this first marathon, only 625 males and 25 females had finally managed to reach the end. The Budapest International Marathon has however gained huge popularity and nowadays, even additional events like a relay marathon (of 3 to 5 people), a fun run (of 3.5 km), and a mini marathon (7.5 km) are also organized along with the 42km international marathon.

marathon of Budapest. The competition starts from Hero's Square and generally about 3,500 people participate in the international marathon, another 3,000 in the relay race and around 5,000 people gather to cheer and run for shorter distances.

The Budapest International Marathon is extremely charming because of the breathtaking views of the capital city that await the runners. The Buda Castle, Gresham Hotel, Chain Bridge, Parliament Hill, Margaret Island, river Danube and Andrassy Avenue relieve the pain of the runners and add to the visual delight of the runners as well as of spectators. The marathon event is followed by a family day, which is held at the Felvonulás Square.
After the race is over, the runners can also visit the fair which is held just opposite to the starting point. Various concerts are held at the fair and performers from different parts of the world showcase their talent at the fair and a spectacular fireworks show is organized in the evening, after which the Budapest International Marathon comes to an end.
The Budapest International Marathon has been and will always remain a popular European marathon; continuing to draw participants from France, Finland, Germany, Italy, America, Great Britain and France.
