Ilona Elek, better known as Ilona Elek-Schacherer was born on May 17th in the year 1907. Born in Budapest, she grew up to be a sportswomen and won acclamations in the field of fencing. A Hungarian Olympic fencer, she was the first women to have won innumerable world fencing titles at that point of time.

An ace fencer, Ilona Elek represented her country in numerous fencing tournaments on the national and international level. Her contribution to the field of Hungarian sports can well be adjudged by her achievements in fencing, which are:
- winning the gold medal in the 1936 Olympiad games, held in Berlin

- Silver medal in the Olympiad games in Helsinki held in the year 1952.
- winning the gold medal in the World Championships for two consecutive years in 1934 and 1935.
- Gold medal in the World Championships held in the year 1951.
- Silver medal in the World championships held in the year 1937 and 1954
- Bronze medal in the 1955 World Championships
Ilona Elek had a record of being the unbeatable National Champion of Hungary in the field of fencing from 1946 to 1952 at a stretch. Having started her career at an early age of 26, Ilona Elek persisted to be a sports icon for the coming generations until her death on 24th July, 1988. One of the most popular sports personalities in Budapest, Ilona Elek left behind a legacy that was to form an important part of Hungarian sports history.
