Budapest History


Budapest History unfolds the story of development of the capital of Hungary. The early inhabitants of the city came from France and Caucasus. Budapest became a part of the Roman Empire in the 1st century. The Huns were the next to migrate to Budapest. They were followed by the clan of Arpad. The country underwent Turkish invasion in the 18th century. The city was severely destroyed during the two World Wars and was subsequently reconstructed in the 20th century.

Budapest History can be traced back to as early as second millennium BC. The early inhabitants of Budapest migrated from Caucasus and France. The Celtic Eravisci tribes inhabited the place called Pannonia form 1st century BC. It was a part of the contemporary Roman Empire. The Romans were followed by the Huns. During this period the Slavs, Avnas and Lombards migrated to Budapest.

Ancient Budapest:

Budapest History shows that in 896 the Magyars came to settle down in this city. The coming of the clan of Arpad marked an important phase in the history of Budapest. The name Buda was also drawn from the name of Arpad's brother Buda. The Arpad dynasty began to rule Hungary. The country became a Christian state during this period.

Budapest became home to many German, Walloon and French settlers. But the twin cities Buda and Pest were completely destroyed in the 12th century due to Mongol invasion. Buda came to be known as "Ofen" at that point of time. The rulers started ruling the country from Buda. Thus it became the most important city of Hungary. During this period both Buda and Pest developed to a great extent.

18th and 19th century Budapest:

The city witnessed the Turkish invasion during this period. The twin cities underwent reconstruction in the 18th century. Various new buildings came into being during this period. The 19th century constructions were marked by Baroque architecture. It was during the 19th century that a single city Budapest was formed by uniting Buda and Pest. 19th century Budapest has also witnessed many revolutions.

One of the most beautiful cities of Europe Budapest witnessed massive destruction during the Second World War. Budapest was ruled by several dynasties at different point of time. It was invaded by numerous foreign powers. After a period of turmoil that is characterized by colonization, war of independence and civil wars Budapest finally gained stability when democracy was introduced in the country. In the 20th century Budapest underwent rapid economic and cultural growth.
