Gresham Palace

Gresham Palace was constructed during the initial years of the 1900s. Also known as Gresham Palota it is at present maintained by the Four Seasons Hotels group. The palace exemplifies the Secessionist style of architecture

The Gresham Palace occupies the river bank area in Hungary. The Palace was built at a place which was earlier occupied by the Nako House. It was a palace built in accordance with the neo-classical style of architecture. The property was acquired by the Gresham Life Assurance Company and later on went on to set up its international headquarters on this location. They wanted to settle for a much more opulent setting. Work for the construction of the Gresham Palace on the lines of the design by Zsigmond Quittner began in 1904. This monumental task was achieved within a few years and in 1907 construction of the palace was complete.

Architecture of the Gresham Palace

The architectural pattern of the Gresham Palace follows one of the genres which originated from Art Noveau. Though the palace lost out on much of its
erstwhile grandeur during the wars, it was easy to determine how beautiful it was at one point of time.Even in those times it was equipped with all the appliances that were essential for the convenience of its occupants. It was replete with a centralized vacuum system and heating devices. The beauty of the facade of the palace was all the more heightened by the peacock gates cast in wrought iron. Within the place the portrait of the national hero Lajos Kossuth by Miksa Roth on stained glass adds to the beauty of the palace.

Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace.

Gresham Palace began its operations as the headquarters of the insurance company. It also served as the residence of some of the members of the British aristocracy. It became a base for a section of the soldiers of the Soviet Union during the Second World War. At the time when the Communist regime came into power, the Gresham palace in Budapest was reduced to an apartment. Following the establishment of a democratic form of government in the country the palace was re instituted in the city. The palace was taken over by the Four Seasons Hotels group in 2001 and converted to a luxury hotel, Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace.
