Gellert Hill


Overlooking the Danube river and the city of Budapest is the Gellert Hill. You can climb up the hill or take a vehicle to reach the top. Legends Live Long: The Story of Gellert Hill

Gellert Hill is named after Bishop Gellert, a Christian missionary who preached Christianity in Hungary. 140 meters high, the hill overlooks the Danube River and the city of Budapest. Gellert hill is associated with many legends. It is said that Bishop Gellert was put in a barrel by the pagans of Hungary and was hurled down the hill. According to another legend, witches used to make night visits to the hill riding on the backs of human beings.

Gellert Hill Attractions

The most fascinating aspect of Gellert Hill at Budapest is the panoramic and magnificent view of the Danube and the city from the top of the hill. Besides, the top of Gellert Hill is studded with a number of monuments as well as eateries and a hotel.

The most significant of all the attractions of Gellert Hill is the Citadel called Citadella. It was constructed by Austrians from 1850 to 1854 and played a key role in Austrian rule over Hungary, in Hungarian independence and later in the second World War. Presently, this historic relic serves as a hotel for tourists.

Other attractions on Gellert Hill in Budapest are as
follows:
  • Statue of Liberty (known as Szabadság szobor and also the Liberation Monument). This is a statue of a woman holding a palm tree with both her hands above her head. The statue signifies the liberation of Hungary from German hands brought about by Russian soldiers.

  • Cave Church. The cave church lies on the way up the hill. It was closed during 1950s but re-opened in 1989.

  • Tabán. It is the northern slope of the hill and consisted of a number of pubs and inns during 1930s. The only remaining feature of Tabán from the 18th century structures is the Deer House. Presently, Aranyszarvas Restaurant is located in this place. This restaurant hosts entertainment shows like rock and folk concerts.

  • Gellert Monument. This is a statue of Bishop Gellert which was constructed in 1904.
Reaching or staying at Gellert Hill is not much of a problem as the Gellert Hotel provides accommodation to the visitors. You can climb to the top of Gellert Hill beginning at Elisabeth Bridge or Gellert Hotel. Otherwise, you can avail a public bus or a vehicle to go up the hill.

The Gellert Hill in Budapest is one of the prime sightseeing destinations of the city. Besides its historic significance, it offers several architectural pieces and a brilliant view of Hungarian landscape traversed by the Danube river. It makes for a really breathtaking view.
