The Black Forest region of Germany is the source of Danube River that flows through several countries and falls in the Black Sea. It is the second longest river of Europe. The Danube river catchment is home to several plants, animals as well as birds. Danube runs through the middle of Budapest.
Danube River discharges from the Black Forest region of Germany and runs 2859 km from west to east and drains into the Black Sea. It is the only eastbound river of Europe. River Danube runs through Hungary, Romania, Germany, Yugoslavia, Austria, Slovakia and Bulgaria. It passes right through the middle of the capital city of Hungary, Budapest. It also flows through other important cities like Vienna, Belgrade and Bratislava.
The basin of the second longest river of Europe is also the longest marshland of the continent. Large stretch of reeds grow on the bed of River Danube. In fact the reedbeds in Danube are among the largest in the world. These reedbeds cover most part of the delta formed by Danube in the Romania coastline. Danube River is home to a number of plants as well as aquatic animals.

Stippa grass can be found in the sandy areas on the banks of Danube. The Letea forest along the river contains several other plants. Different species of

water lilies grow in the river. 300 species of birds visit the Danube basin. Home to 45 species of fish including Acipensednidae, Danube forms an important ecosystem in this river basin.
Influence of Danube on Climate:
The climatic condition of the Danube river basin is quite dry. The average annual rainfall of this region is 450 millimeters. The delta is slowly being submerged by the river. As a result the land area is being subjected to degradation. The gradual submergence of the deltaic area has resulted in annual flooding. It is estimated that about 91% of the basin area experience this flooding. The flooding results in sedimentation. Thus the geomorphic characteristics of the area is continuously changing.
Danube, the "Queen of Europe":
Danube River is also historically significant as many of the cultural heritage have evolved along the banks of this river. This river has often been used by traders as well as soldiers for the purpose of transportation. Danube has been used by the crusaders. Not only that Danube has been the subject of many treaties as well.
Since Danube runs right through the middle of Budapest, the city has taken full advantage of it. The commercial and military significance of Danube has make it one of the most important river of not only Budapest, Hungary but whole Europe.
