Danube Promenade is one of the major tourist attractions located along the Danube. The Second World War caused considerable damage to the Promenade. Shoes on the Danube Promenade is the most significant memorial on this stretch.
Danube Promenade is a popular attraction in Budapest. Situated along the Pest side of the city, it occupies a considerable stretch, right from Szechenyi Chain Bridge to the Erzebet Bridge. Since the earliest times, the Danube Promenade in Budapest witnessed a growth of numerous hotels. The first hotel on the bank of the Danube was set up in1867. These included such names as Carlton, Bristol and Ritz. The Second World War inflicted heavy damage on the promenade. As a result the hotels also suffered huge damage and most of them were destroyed except Bristol hotel. It was finally destroyed in 1969.

Palace or the Gresham Palota, the Belvaros, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Contra-Aquincum and the Vigado Concert Hall.
Shoes on the Danube Promenade
The Danube Promenade is ordained with various sculptures that dot the entire stretch. These include Jozsef Eotvos and Shoes on the Danube Promenade. The Shoes on the Danube Promenade is one of the famous memorials built on the banks of the river. Its located in close proximity to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The memorial was designed by Can Togay and Gyula Pauer and was erected to commemorate the death of all those people who lost their lives to the Arrow Cross militiamen. Their shoes have been preserved on the river bank after they plunged into waters of the Danube after they were shot during the Second World War. The Danube Promenade constitutes a major tourist attraction of the city.
