Budapest by Train


Traveling to Budapest by train is a pleasant and comfortable experience . There are three train stations in Budapest from where both domestic and international trains operate. Domestic trains are operated by Hungarian Railway Company. Direct railway lines connect Budapest with other major European cities. Special trains are also available for tours.

Train Travel in Budapest

Reaching Budapest by Train is almost as easy and convenient as traveling to Budapest by air. The city has a vast railway network that connects it to other places in Hungary and outside the country. Both scheduled and non-stop trains run between Budapest and other Hungarian cities and towns. These are inter-city trains that provide a speedy journey from Budapest to the major destinations within the country.

Moreover, Budapest is well linked to the major cities of different European countries. Direct rail lines run to the major European cities from Budapest, thus making train travel to Budapest easy, fast and convenient. International trains to Budapest from various European destinations include more than 50 trains.

The state owned rail company that runs rail services in Budapest is MAV or the Hungarian Railways Company. Various kinds of trains are available in Budapest. These include Express trains, passenger trains called Szemelyvonat and fast trains known as the InteCity Gyorsvonat.

Budapest Train Stations

There are three major railway stations in Budapest. These are as follows:
  • Keleti Station, the eastern Station from which most trains depart. It serves domestic as well as international trains.
  • Nyugati Station. This the Western Station and the international trains running from this station go towards the east.
  • Deli Station. It is the Southern Station that connects Budapest with Lake Balaton and Transdanubia. Reaching the railway stations

    Metro services or rail-bus services are available in Budapest for traveling to the rail stations. The rail-buses are run by MAV. Reservations for rail-buses can be made at Intercity train stations in Hungary. The buses connect all the rail stations of Budapest and can be availed from outside the stations.

    Rail Passes

    Rail passes for trains in Budapest have to be obtained in North America before traveling to Hungary. These passes cannot be bought in Europe. The passes include Eurail Passes, Hungarian Flexipass, Eurail Flexipass, Eurail Saverpass, Eurail Youthpass, Eurail Youth Flexipass, Europass, European East Pass, Rail Europe and Derrail.

    Special Trains

    Train tours are available for touring certain regions of Budapest. The Danube Bend Train runs to the Danube Bend and along the shores of Lake Balaton.

    The Cogwheel Railway, Fogaskereku vasút is a mountain railway that connects the Buda Hills. A trip to the Buda Hills in the train running along this mountain rail line can be an exhilarating experience.
