Leipzig is a city in the German state of Saxony. It is also the largest city of this state. The name Leipzig is derived from the Slavic word "lipsk," meaning place where the linden trees grow. The motto of Leipzig city is "Leipzig is coming!" Leipzig is one of Germany's major industrial, commercial, and transportation centers. Leipzig city is also an important trade fair center of Germany. The famous musical composer, Johann Sebastian Bach, was a resident of Leipzig city. The city of Leipzig was badly damaged during the World War II, but most of the historical buildings were reconstructed later. Leipzig city has applied for hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games for 2012.
