Kurt Schwitters

Kurt Schwitters, a renowned German painter, was born in Hanover. He is also a collage expert of the 20th century. He was a graphic designer, artist, set designer, typographer and a poet by profession. He was also associated with Dadaism. Kurt Schwitters had mastered Merz works, which included making art pieces out of waste objects.

Life of Kurt Schwitters

In his early days, Kurt was very introvert by character. He was a student of Dresden Academy of Art from 1909 to 1914. In 1916, when Dada movement was launched, he released himself from traditional art. Dadaism is a cultural movement, which mainly involves literature, visual arts, graphic design and theater.

Kurt Schwitters was a man having outstanding power of imagination. One of the important artworks created by him was known as "The Cathedral of Erotic Misery", but it was eventually destroyed in 1943.

Apart from painting Merz collages, Kurt Schwitters used to write poems and perform those poems. He also had
interest in typography. In 1937, Schwitters left his homeland and went to Norway. Again in 1940, the painter went to Britain with his son. He spent few years of his life in London. He died in England's Kendal and was buried at Ambleside. Despite the troubles of his life, he stood his ground with his independent, un-dogmatic, and non-elitist conception of Merz.

Works of Kurt Schwitters

From 1919 to 1923, Schwitters created numerous Merz pictures. His pictures reflected inner tension developing from the sensitive combination of ideas and practicality, aesthetics and debris, art and life.

From 1923 to 1932, he used to publish a magazine named Merz. In 1924 he set up his own advertising agency, Merzwerbe and by the end of 1920's he became the official typographer of town council of Hanover. Schwitters was involved in various activities during his stay in Norway.

The visual work done by Schwitters has been catalogued in Catalogue Raisonne. Schwritters was a master of subtle color and precarious balance. More constructive ideas were brought in his work after 1924.
