The Herrenhauser Garten of Hanover is situated in Lower Saxony. This garden is made up of the Berggarten, the Great Garden, the Welfengarten and the Georgengarten. These gardens are counted among major tourist attractions of the city of Hanover.
The Great Garden is spread over approximately 50 hectares of land. It is adorned with statues and plush green lawns. In the summer months, the ‘Festival of Small Arts’ and the ‘Small Festival in the Great Garden’ is organized here. A firework competition also takes place here. Various musicals and theatrical performances are staged at the Garden Theater every summer. The great collection of artist Niki de Saint Phalle is kept in the three-roomed grotto, located in the northwestern part of the garden.
The Welfengarten houses the main building of the University of Hanover. It was destroyed during the

World War II. But it was again re-built. The Georgengarten was created by the Christian Schaumburgs.
The Berggarten was built in 1666. It was then a vegetable garden. It was the Sophia of Hanover who transformed this garden into a garden planted with variety of plants. A conservatory was built on this garden in 1686. It was designed by architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves. It had an excellent collection of palms. A bigger conservatory was built in 1880 for the palm collection. However, the garden suffered heavily during the air raids of 1943. A rainforest-house was built in place of the conservatory in 2000.
