Frank Wedekind

A renowned German poet, dramatist and short story writer, Frank Wedekind, has made a place among the well-known personalities in Germany. Born in Hanover in Germany in 1864, the full name of this great playwright was Benjamin Frank Wedekind. He was the second of the six children, who were born to Friedrich Wilhelm Wedekind and Emilie Kammerer.

Wedekind spent most of his life in Munich. He was compelled to study law, though he was never interested in the subject. His only interest was in writing, which later turned into his profession. His father expired in 1888, after which Wedekind went to Munich. From there, he traveled to many European cities in the world, which included Paris and London. However, he returned to Munich drained out physically as well as economically in 1891. He began his marital life in 1908.

Frank Wedekind has many achievements to his credit. He was a man who had his own school of thoughts. These came out in his writings and plays. He made separate laws for himself and defied the set rules and orders of the society. He was one of the main forerunners of expressionism and the school of absurd drama. His first major play was Fruhlings Erwachen (Spring Awakening), which was staged in 1891. The play was a scandalous one. However, the play was adapted into a successful play in 2006. Apart from this, some of the other works of Frank Wedekind, which are
equally popular, are Die Buchse der Pandora (Pandora's Box, 1904) and Erdgeist (Earth Spirit, 1895). Most of the plays and stories are based on human relations and emotional crisis. Some of these plays acted as strong bases for plays that were scripted in the later years.
